Notes from the Summer Messiah Series Week One
We’re excited for you to join us for this midweek summer series, as we journey through Messiah; the NLT version of the New Testament without any chapter or verse numbers. Here are Pastor Frank’s highlights from night one covering Luke 1-12!
From the Gospel of Luke Chapter 1:
“Having carefully investigated all that has happened in the life and ministry of Jesus, I have written an accurate account for you, so that you can be certain of the truth, most honorable Theophilus.”
From Acts Chapter 1:
“In my first book, Theophilus, I told you about all that Jesus did and taught until the day He was taken into heaven, teaching and giving His apostles instructions. After He suffered and died, He rose from the dead and appeared to His apostles and proved that He was actually alive, during which time He continued to talk about The Kingdom of God and salvation.”
Pastor Frank’s “Letterman” TOP 22 LUKE 1 – 12:
Luke opens with the account of Zechariah.
Gabriel then appears to Mary …
Mary then sings one of the most beautiful and theologically deep songs in all the Bible – including the Psalms.
Zechariah also sings a song of prophecy, and – IMPORTANT! – he equates God’s covenant with MERCY!
Jesus, the Messiah, is born. And it is prophesied that although He was sent from God the Father, “many will oppose Him.”
At the age of 12, Jesus hangs back at the Temple and amazes the elders with His godly perspectives … because … He is God.
In CH 3, JTB makes a point that is still true today …
In CH 3, JTB also make the point that Jesus WILL separate the wheat from the chaff.
Jesus then spends 40 days fasting and praying, and is then tempted by Satan.
Jesus begins calling disciples – and they all leave whatever they are doing and “come at once to follow Jesus.”
Jesus begins healing people with chronic and terminal illnesses and maladies.
Jesus uses the confusing wine, wineskins, and patches teaching illustrations.
Jesus affirms the earlier teaching of JTB: “Why do you call me ‘Lord’ but you don’t do what I say?”
Twice Jesus explains that all secrets and hidden deeds will eventually come into the light and will be known.
Jesus TWICE explains the reality that if someone is simply OBSTINATE in their refusal to even LISTEN to the good news, it is o.k. to MOVE ON.
The parable of the Good Samaritan.
Then there’s the Mary and Martha issue …
Jesus: “Anyone who isn’t with Me opposes Me. Anyone who isn’t working with Me is actually working against Me.”
Jesus gives the PePRs the WOES.
Jesus tells the PeRPS that they “crush” people with unbearable religious burdens but do not lift a finger to help ease the burden.
Jesus: “Don’t be worried about those who can only kill the body. The One to concern yourself with is the One who has the authority to cast you into Hell.”
“Be dressed for service and keep your lamps burning.”
