Who is the Triune God? How can Jesus be God and Human at the Same Time

Christians of all stripes—Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Protestant—have long held the first seven ecumenical councils in high regard. For them the decisions of the councils reflect biblical teaching on the most essential matters in Christianity: the Trinity, Christology, and (by extension) how our salvation occurs. This class explores the history and theology of the first four councils in four successive weeks, each week roughly corresponding to one council. The first two weeks cover the first and second councils (325, 381 AD), which resolved questions related to the deity of Christ and the Holy Spirit and thereby gave Christians consistent language for the Trinity. The second two weeks of class survey the third and fourth councils (431, 451 AD), which together answered the question, “how can Jesus be God and human at the same time?” Throughout these discussions, the class also focuses on the meaning and nature of Christian orthodoxy as well as the failure of several “heretical” views to express consistently the biblical view, all the while dispelling false notions that are often associated with these councils and their theological formulations. Beginners as well as advanced learners will benefit from this class. The material can sometimes be challenging, but it all practically connects to the Christian life, including how salvation in Christ occurs, the nature of spiritual formation, and the extent of our imitation of Christ. No prior knowledge is necessary.
